Summerfield resident Michael Jones is facing the death penalty for the murder of his wife and four children.

The evidence provided on Thursday includes excerpts from police interviews with Jones after he was detained in Georgia. Jones is seen hunched down and mumbling quietly as he tells investigators that he did not turn himself in because he was afraid.

Jones was arrested in September 2019 after confessing to the crimes and showing deputies where he had concealed the victims’ remains. According to Jones’ public lawyer, John Spivey, they expect to summon 18 witnesses to testify about the abuse Jones endured as a youngster.

While prosecutors want Jones’ death, Jones’ defense attorney contends that a lesser sentence is justified considering his disturbed childhood.

According to Jones, the horrible killing spree began in July 2019 when his wife, Casey Jones, accused him of infidelity after searching through his phone.

What Exactly Did Michael Jones Do?

Jones told detectives that after murdering his wife, he began using her phone, sending texts, and posting on her Facebook page to mislead her family. He confirmed to investigators that he had her phone and texted as Casei for a period.

Jones stated he drove around with their bodies in his vehicle for days. He was caught following an accident in which his wife’s body was recovered in his van, according to the footage. Jones was told by the investigator that he could smell the vehicle from a great distance away and that no one had ever said anything to him while the dead were inside.

Jones said that he used to use a cleanser to keep the odor at bay. He also acknowledged using fly spray while flies were flying around.

Michael Jones Murdered His Wife And Children In What Way?

Detectives suspect Jones strangled the two eldest children, according to an arrest document.

Two weeks later, Jones drowned his two youngest children. He left the bodies in their Summerfield house for a few weeks before loading them into his vehicle and transferring them to Georgia, according to the affidavit.

Casey Jones died as a result of blunt force trauma, according to the Sheriff’s Office, as determined by the county medical examiner’s office.

He told police that she poked him with a baseball bat during an escalating quarrel at their Marion County home. In his wrath, he then battered her to death with the bat. Jones told investigators that his wife grabbed a baseball bat during an altercation, according to court filings. According to the affidavit, he snatched the bat from her and beat her repeatedly with it.

His defense counsel argues that the stress of his terrible upbringing, which includes molestation by his father and torture at the hands of a violent stepfather, affected his mental health from a young age. They argue that those criteria demand life in prison rather than execution. The prosecution, however, dismisses those reasons, maintaining that the heinous crimes demanded his death.
