After quitting college, realizing that liberal arts schooling was not for him, Lee had moved to Hollywood. There, he had worked as a receptionist in a nursing agency before starting his own nursing agency that specialized in HIV/AIDS treatment.

He had later sold the agency and switched to working as a music-video casting director and talent manager, after a chance meeting with a Hollywood producer. His early career in the entertainment industry, when he was managing actor Wes Bentley, was captured in a documentary titled My Big Break.

In the mid-2000s, he had suffered a heart attack while he was out in a street jogging.

He holds the record for being the 1st African-American to solely produce an Oscar-winning film. He had earned the accolade when Halle Berry had won an Academy Award in the category of ‘Best Actress’ for her work in Monster’s Ball (2001), Lee’s first feature film as a producer.

His 2nd feature-film directorial venture, Precious (2009), had been nominated for 6 Academy Awards, including 2 nominations for Lee (‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Picture’).
