Gold Coast man arrested over allegedly sending deep faked photos of students and teachers
A man has been charged after allegedly sending deep fake images of students and teachers around schools and sporting groups.
Authorities were first made aware of the situation on September 10, after a Brisbane school complained of receiving an email that contained images of staff and children.
The 53-year-old man was arrested by police at Southport, on the Gold Coast, on Friday.
He has been charged with five counts of obscene publications and exhibitions, one count of obscene publication and exhibition of a child under 16 years and one count of endangering particular property by fire.
Deep faked images use artificial intelligence to fabricate videos or images of another person.
Under Queensland law, it is an offence to publicly sell, distribute or expose obscene computer-generated images, with the charge carrying a maximum penalty of two years jail time.
For charges involving children under the age of 16, but older than 12, the offender is liable to up to five years imprisonment.
An increased maximum penalty of 10 years is applied for content produced of children under than 12.
The man is expected to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court on Saturday.
