Christopher was born on 16th October 1943, in Los Angeles, California. He is the second-born child of actor Robert Mitchum and Dorothy Mitchum. His elder brother James Mitchum is also an actor, and his younger sister Trina Mitchum is an actress.

In 2012, he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican candidate. On June 5th, 2012, he came third for the House of Representatives. Mitchum ran again for the U.S congressional set held by Representative Capps and won alongside four other Republicans.
